Commercial roofs around the lake
Many of the valley's businesses, from motels and lodges to restaurants, stores, offices, churches and shops along Highway 178 and Highway 155, sit under flat or low-slope roofs, and a lot of those roofs are getting old. The weather up here is hard on them: hot summers down by the lake, freezing winter nights and the occasional snow. Those big temperature swings open seams, crack flashing and wear out old coatings faster than you would think.
- Spray foam roofing: foam sprayed over a sound existing roof, including old gravel and metal roofs, seals it in one seamless layer. It also adds insulation, which helps keep the building cooler in summer and warmer on winter nights.
- Roof coatings: Mule-Hide silicone and acrylic coatings protect foam and other flat roofs. Depending on the system, a coating can last in some cases up to 20 years, and it can be cleaned and recoated when it wears.
- TPO roofing: white single-ply roofs for offices, stores and shops, installed new or used to repair an existing TPO roof.
- Commercial roof repair: leaks, split seams, failed flashing and water that sits on the roof, with a written repair plan.

Roofing in fire country
The Kern River Valley has seen major wildfires, and a lot of owners up here think about fire when it is time for a new roof. When we look at your roof, we can talk through fire-resistant roofing options for the mountain area, and any requirements that apply to your property get confirmed during permitting.
Whatever the roof, keep pine needles and leaves cleared out of the valleys and off flat roofs. Dry debris sitting on a roof is exactly what wind-blown embers land in.
Homes and cabins in the valley
Homes here range from older cabins and lake houses to newer homes in the foothills. For houses we do roof replacements and roof repairs, with shingle products including GAF, Owens Corning and Malarkey. We install shingles to the manufacturer's high-wind specifications, which matters with the afternoon wind that comes up across the lake. A typical home re-roof takes about three days.
At the higher elevations, snow and freeze-thaw cycles are tough on roof edges, tile and underlayment, and a roof inspection after a hard winter can catch damage early. We repair cracked tile and do tile lift-and-relay with new underlayment. Swamp coolers are common in this dry climate. We flash and seal around cooler stands, and if a cooler is coming out, we close up the opening in the roof. Low, flat sections of houses get TPO or a roof coating. If a storm damaged your roof, we can help with your insurance claim. See residential roofing.

Can you help me choose a fire-resistant roof?
Yes. When we look at your roof, we can talk through fire-resistant roofing options for the mountain area. The valley communities are unincorporated, so permits go through Kern County, and we pull the permits for our jobs.
Is it worth adding insulation to a commercial roof up here?
Often, yes. Spray foam adds insulation on top of the existing roof, which helps with summer heat by the lake and cold winter nights. We look at the roof first and tell you honestly whether foam is a good fit.
